Rappers just donʼt come any more ʻrealʼ than Da Real Way Gooney.
A few minutes in the presence of the 25-year-old Atlanta rapper and you know that he has lived through the peaks and valleys of life and is now ready to share his story with the world. As one of the shining stars of Big Purp Entertainment, Da Real Way Gooney is set to put the burgeoning label on the map. Like many young rap fans, he cut his teeth on the likes of Juvenile, Ludacris, Master P, Jay Z and the Cash Money crew. “From 1997 to 2005 — thatʼs when I got my real taste of music and I started being able to understand what they were saying. When we were little kids we didnʼt know the meaning. We just rapped the song because we liked it.
By the time I got to the age where I learned what they were talking about I was actually going through some of the same stuff in those songs.” I look back on some of that stuff and think I had a lot of people praying for me. I still do. Itʼs just by the grace of God that I made it through.
Gooney vowed many times to get his life on track and, many times, suffered setbacks but eventually, he met a man who would help him change his life for good. “I actually did some time with Purp, the head of my label, Big Purp Entertainment.” He said Purp looked out for him when they were locked up but they fell out of contact after he got out. “I happened to see a picture of him on Facebook,” he recalls. “We reconnected, he signed me to his label and the rest is history in the making.”
